Artistic Statement

As a mover and choreographer I believe the best pieces of dance movement are purely the parts that are born from your creative brain crafted without ego and based in movement that feels good to you. As an artist who gets to share my greatest love with my students I show them that there is value in dance that has no purpose other than to fulfill ourselves.

Often when I choreograph I first feel the urge to move and then will put on a newly discovered song that has peaked my interest. The music I move too inspires me in so many different ways whether it be the lyrics or the intricate beats in the music. I find myself really playing with the tempo or instruments I find interesting and then shifting to the concept of the song as inspiration. I base my choreography around my first instincts and authentic movement. By sharing these insights with my students about my own creative process it encourages them to always see a piece from many different perspectives while channeling their own personal style.

My biggest influence is finding new ways to move that connect with my body in a way that feels gratifying. My goal is to always feel like I took risks after completing a piece which could mean reinventing myself and not getting too comfortable in my movement pattern or finding new ways to indulge in my safe spaces. I always try to incorporate what feels most natural to progress in the movement in combination with an unexpected or interesting way to shift what motion feels best. In this I implore my student to discover new movement patterns and make sure that they know that no movement is off the table.

My biggest ambition is to encourage this same creativity in my students. My student understands that a balance of movement that is comfortable while also always pushing your boundaries to create something that combines the two in a fulfilling way.
